Teaching

Our classes and activities are led by teaching teams of two or more volunteers. The Director of Religious Education (D.R.E.) publishes a teaching schedule in September based on information provided on Family Registration forms. Whenever possible, we pair experienced volunteers with those who are new to our program. We offer teacher trainings periodically during the year to review policy, procedures and suggested best practices for leading effective classes. Seasoned volunteers will share that many classes will not always “go as planned” but something unexpected and wonderful usually happens! We greatly appreciate our volunteers and honor their intuition and creativity.

We believe that parents are the primary spiritual teachers of their children and we are a cooperative church school. In our program, all parents whose child(ren) have been enrolled in any Religious Education (RE) Program for more than one year are asked to co-teach one session (a session can be two-three months) or support other aspects of the program. In families where two parents attend UUCH, both are invited to participate in program support. Volunteer opportunities are listed on our yearly registration form and are available from the D.R.E. at any time. Although we will make every effort to accommodate your preferences for specific sessions or curricula, our highest priority is to fill Sunday morning positions. We ask parents to consider the best dynamic possible for their family and for their classrooms when choosing volunteer opportunities. We understand that you may or may not wish to work with groups that include your own family members.

In keeping with our Safe Congregation Policy, it is expected that all volunteers will furnish any information necessary for the processing of criminal background checks. This process is conducted by the D.R.E. and the Minister.
